"Eu escrevo versos ao meio-dia
e a morte ao sol é uma cabeleira
que passa em frios frescos sobre a minha cara de vivo
Estou vivo e escrevo Sol (…)”

It was commissioned by Bishop Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar at the beginning of the 19th century at a point where one of the old medieval gateways stood, giving access to the area inside the walls. The gateway was designed by the Genoese architect Francesco Saverio Fabri, who was brought from Italy specifically for the construction of this monumental gateway.

The arch is integrated into a fine façade in the Neoclassical style and in a niche above it you can see a marble statue of St Thomas Aquinas. On the inside of the arch, it is still possible to see a traditional vault in Algarve brickwork.

The Town Arch has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

After a bohemian life in Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto, during which he spent time with a number of literary figures, Teixeira Gomes undertook many journeys abroad in the service of his father’s export company.

From 1895 onwards, he made new literary contacts and published a number of works including ‘Gente Singular’.

Teixeira Gomes’s career as a politician included the positions of Minister in London and President of the Portuguese Republic.

He subsequently embarked on a further period of foreign travel, and spent the last ten years of his life in Algeria, where he died in 1941.
