Later, she moved to Lisbon where, alongside teaching, she devoted herself to the regular publication of articles in the press and novels. One of the most important was ‘A Costa dos Murmúrios’ (The Murmuring Coast), which provided the inspiration for a film by Margarida Cardoso.

Influenced by Latin-American magic realism, Lídia Jorge’s writing has been recognised with Portuguese and international prizes on a number of occasions.

He is still today regarded as one of the Algarve’s major figures of the 20th century, thanks above all to his art as a writer, poet and playwright.

Of his published works, one of the most important is ‘A Severa’, which inspired the first Portuguese sound film directed by Leitão de Barros.

This man from Lagos also occupied other posts, such as that of a doctor in the Portuguese Army, Minister of Public Instruction and of Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Ambassador in Brazil.

João de Deus had dealings with some of the members of the Generation of ’70, was elected a deputy, worked for a number of publications and was made commissioner-general for the teaching of reading. Following on from this position, in 1876, he published the famous ‘Cartilha Maternal’, a revolutionary method in Portuguese education.

João de Deus’s poetry also made its mark and he was regarded by Antero de Quental as the best poet of his generation.

João de Deus died in Lisbon in 1896 at the age of 66.

This university researcher and professor trained in law and history and was responsible for leading the project Faro – National Capital of Culture 2005 and co-founding the publishing company Gente Singular.

Rosa Mendes’s professional career also included coordinating the Centre of Studies of the Heritage and History of the Algarve.

António Rosa Mendes published a number of books, the last of which was ‘A Peregrinação e a peregrinação de Fernão Mendes Pinto’ (Peregrination and the peregrination of Fernão Mendes Pinto).

During a period in Lisbon, Porfírio studied fine art, joined the pioneering group of futurism in Portugal and led the publication of the periodical ‘Portugal Futurista’.

Later, he settled in Paris, where he became acquainted with intellectuals such as Pablo Picasso and Simone de Beauvoir.

Years later, he returned to his native country and contributed to the foundation of Faro’s Ethnographic Museum, for which he designed pictures about the customs of the people of the Algarve.

Carlos Porfírio’s achievements also include the direction of two films.

Known as the people’s poet, this shepherd and lottery-ticket seller came to fame though his ability to improvise in a wide variety of situations. Aleixo impressed people with the precision of his language, his concise expression and the ironic tone with which he summed up events and people’s actions, in verses such as the following:

It’s not just on the wide earth
That poets sing so well
The nightingales come from the hills
And sing like none other
